The King Alfred Division

King Alfred sits toward the North East area of Somerset and stretches from Vole and Clewer in the North down to Thorngrove and Othery in the South. It takes in the larger villages of Wedmore, Mark, Burtle, Edington, Catcott, Shapwick, Ashcott, Stawell, Sutton Mallett, Moorlinch, Greinton, Pedwell, Middlezoy, and Othery, and straddles a large section of the historic Somerset Levels.

Our part of Somerset has provided some of the earliest records of human habitation in Britain, from around 450,000 BC, and the historical events haven't stopped since then. Cheddar Man, the Sweet Track, the Glastonbury Lake Villages, the Roman Invasion, Alfred the Great, the Civil War and the Pitchfork Rebellion, the Dissenters (we don't seem to be very good at following rules!), powered flight, cows, cider, festivals, wildlife, cheese, and a pace of life envied around the world make us a target destination for tourists and blow-ins every year.

King Alfred is composed of 12 Parish Councils and Parish Meetings (details on the Primary Settlements page) who now have direct access to the New Somerset Council through Harry and me. Your Parish Councillors and the Parish Clerk (the official that looks after the procedural and legal side of things) all have the most up-to-date and pertinent information on your communities, and they should always be your first port of call when looking for solutions to local questions.
